My grandfather passed away in 2015, and that same year I found myself facing the daunting task of going through his home. It’s a strange thing to go through a lifetime of possessions while feeling like their owner was due to walk in the room at any moment, and as I sorted through my grandfather’s home, I discovered so many amazing things. Some I knew about, but many I found myself wishing I could ask about.

In some ways, a person’s belongings can deepen your understanding of them, while ultimately leaving holes in the narrative. One particular item that piqued my interest was a small plastic bag that held four reels of Super 8mm film. Only one was labeled:  “Lollie and Bill - Summer, Hula Hoop”, and finding this treasure sent a shock wave through me. Lollie, my grandmother, passed away before I was born and I had only ever seen photos of her. Here, though, and for the first time, I would have the opportunity to see her in motion.

There is real magic in moving pictures, especially when you get to see someone who has only ever been in photographs come to life before your eyes. With the total saturation of moving images in today’s world though, it’s easy to feel that some projects aren’t “magical” at all. A commercial for a fitness company might not bring a tear to your eye, and a short video that took eons to shoot and edit can easily lose it’s shine after the 400th edit, but in both cases the magic is still there. Your calling, hobby or side hustle of creativity has weight regardless of the object of the video you’re creating; it’s still real people with real lives that you’re capturing. Even on the most mundane shoots, remember the energy of sharing space with the people around you. Even during the post-production process, while nothing is uploading fast enough and you’ve had to restart the computer twice, remember that someone, someday might find your work and have a shock wave run through them as they marvel at what you’ve made, too.
